Making a Memory Box

A memory box is a safe container where you can both contain your grief and open it up whenever you want to. Each time you view your box and explore its contents, you may feel more connected to the spirit of your loved one.

Creating a memory box to honor your loved one can be a very healing experience. You can set aside a special time and take create care to decorate your box. The process of creating a memory box – from choosing images, words and objects to adorn the inside and outside of the box to collecting all the mementos and placing them inside your box – will encourage you to remember your loved one.

To make a memory box, you first need to find an empty box. It can be a craft box, shoe box, jewelry box, cigar box or any other type of container that you wish to use. Then, gather some items to decorate the box, such as photographs, cards, stickers, ribbons, fabric, paper, paint, glitter, flowers, or any of your favorite arts and craft materials.

You may choose to design a collage of pictures and words to decorate your entire box. Or, you may decide to simply paint the outside of your box. Or, you may want to line the inside of your box with soft fabric. This memory box is yours – so use your own creativity to decorate it anyway you choose.

Once you have finished decorating your box, collect objects that remind you of your loved one. Once you have found special photographs or other mementos that will fit into your box, place them inside.

Your memory box can be kept in a safe place for when you wish to open it up and reminisce. Or, you may want to keep your memory box in a place where others can see it, so that you have the opportunity to share your memories with others..
